Liquid Soul Information
Liquid Soul is an American freestyle fusion, jazz, hip-hop, and funk, ensemble. The current lineup of the group consists of Mars Williams (saxophone), Devin Staples (drums), John Janowiak (trombone), Ron Haynes (original trumpet), My Boy Elroy (Beatbox and DJ), Tommy Klein (guitar), Dirty MF (MC), Brian “MCB” Quarles (MC), and Ricky Showalter (bass). The group formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1993. It has helped pioneer the acid jazz movement in the United States during the 1990s.
Their first regular gig was at Chicago’s Elbo Room, where their rapidly expanding popularity prompted Ark 21 Records to release their self-titled debut album Liquid Soul. A well-publicized attendance boosted their prominence at Dennis Rodman’s birthday celebration.
Following that, they toured the United States and Canada and Germany, Turkey, and Japan. They’ve opened for Sting and Isaac Hayes, performed at Bill Clinton’s second inauguration parade and 21st Century Ball, and were the first acid jazz band to perform at the Newport Jazz Festival.
They also performed twice at the South By Southwest Music Festival, dubbed “the single hottest showcase of the festival” by the Austin American-Statesman. They’ve released four additional albums: Make Some Noise, Here’s the Deal (which was nominated for a Grammy), Evolution, and, most recently, One-Two Punch.
Liquid Soul has performed several notable performances at different venues such as Double Door Liquid Soul 20th Anniversary Show, Chicago, Double Door Liquid Soul 15th Anniversary Show, Chicago, Newport Jazz Festival in Madarao, Japan, and many others.
