Lang Lang Information

Lang Lang (June 14, 1982) is a Chinese concert pianist from Shenhe District, Shenyang, Liaoning. His first contact with Western classical music was when Lang watched the Tom and Jerry episode The Cat Concerto. The episode features Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 that motivated him to play the piano. At three, Lang started to take piano lessons by Professor Zhu Ya-Fen, and two years later, he won the Shenyang Piano Competition.

Lang played Op. 10 and Op. 25 études by Chopin at the Beijing Concert Hall when he was 13 years old. The next year, he was a featured soloist at the China National Symphony’s inaugural concert attended by President Jiang Zemin and broadcasted by China Central Television. He later moved to the US with his father and began studying at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Lang stormed into the classical music scene in 1999 and was called “the J. Lo of the piano” by pianist Earl Wild. In 2001, he debuted with Yuri Temirkanov at the sold-out Carnegie Hall and later toured with the Philadelphia Orchestra, celebrating its 100th anniversary in Beijing. He was the featured soloist on the Golden Globe-winning score of The Painted Veil.

Lang has performed at various venues such as the Ravinia Festival Chicago, Theaterplatz in Dresden, Hollywood Bowl Los Angeles, Central Park New York, and Derby Park Hamburg. He also performed at the Nobel Prize concert in Stockholm in 2007. Lang Lang has won several awards and honors for his talent and was selected as an official worldwide ambassador to the Shanghai Expo 2010, chosen to be a United Nations Messenger of Peace, and received the 2013 Echo Klassik Award.
