Nicole Wray (May 2, 1981) is an American singer and songwriter. She was born in Salinas, California. While still a youngster, Wray moved to Portsmouth, Virginia. She rose to fame as a soloist in the church chorus and as a model in local shows. Wray met the up-and-coming rapper Missy Elliott when they were both teenagers. Elliott sought to expand her record label, The Goldmind Inc. and wanted to sign a female singer. After hearing Wray perform SWV's "Weak," Elliott was so impressed that he signed her as the first recording artist on his label and helped her secure a distribution contract with Elektra Records.
Wray contributed vocals to Missy Elliott's debut single, "Gettaway," from the album Supa Dupa Fly (1997). Wray's debut song, "Make It Hot," was released in June 1998. The song reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and went gold within six weeks of its debut, meaning over 700,000 copies had been purchased.
Wray's debut album, Make It Hot, was published on August 25, 1998. The record only found moderate success, reaching number 42 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums and 91 on the UK Albums Chart. After the record came out, Wray joined Elliott on his concert tour as the support act and backup singer. Album follow-ups "I Can't See" and "Eyes Better Not Wander" stalled at number 71 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list in 1999, demonstrating a lack of crossover appeal.
