La Onda Information
La Onda started when rock & roll from the United States and Britain entered Mexican music culture. Rock & roll was "a wedge and a mirror for societies caught in the throes of rapid modernization" as it expanded and took root around the globe.
Young Mexicans started to see themselves reflected in their American and British counterparts, and it was inevitable that they would be moved by the social action of other developing nations as they modernized.
In the aftermath of the Tlatelolco massacre in Mexico City in 1968, a local hippie movement called jipitecas emerged and spread across the nation and even into Central America. A fresh wave of Mexican rock music, influenced by Mexican and international styles, started developing in 1969, incorporating political protest imagery into its songs. La Onda Chicana was the culmination of this movement, which drew some 300,000 people to a two-day "Mexican Woodstock" event called Avándaro in September 1971.
