La Conquista Information
Lorenzo Ferrero's La Conquista (sometimes spelled Montezuma) is a two-act opera based on a notion by Alessandro Baricco, with a libretto written by Ferrero and Frances Karttunen and translated into three languages. It recounts the important events leading up to and following the 1521 Spanish conquest and the destruction of the Aztec Empire and its culture.
The libretto (written in English, Spanish, and Nahuatl) synthesizes indigenous and European literary sources preserved in their original languages, except for a few translations.
Bernal Daz del Castillo's The Honest History of the Conquest of New Spain, Book XII of the Florentine Codex, the writings of Juan Boscán Almogáver, Bernardino de Sahagn, Lope de Vega, and Heinrich Heine, and collections of Aztec prayers, songs, and poems like Cantares Mexicanos and Romances de los seores de Nueva Espaa provide the source texts.
Although ethnic influences on the musical language are minimal, the vocal portion is given a particular rhythm due to the use of the Nahuatl language, marked by different short and long vowels.
