L. Shankar Information
L. Shankar (April 26, 1950) is an Indian composer, singer, and violinist. He was born in Madras, India. At seven, he began violin lessons and performed his first public at a Ceylonese temple. In 1969, he moved to the United States to attend Wesleyan University to major in ethnomusicology. After numerous years of touring with other Indian singers, Shankar created a trio with his brothers, L. Vaidyanathan and L. Subramaniam, and began touring all over the country.
He was introduced to jazz greats like Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Garrison, and John McLaughlin while he was a student at Wesleyan University. Shankar and McLaughlin's 1975 formation of Shakti was one of the earliest examples of a band fusing Eastern and Western musical traditions. Shakti (1975), A Handful of Beauty (1976), and Natural Elements (1978) were their three studio albums (1977).
After the group broke up, Shankar played violin for Frank Zappa for a while before forming his band, The Epidemics, and releasing multiple albums under his name. The Last Temptation of Christ (1989) was the film for which he and Peter Gabriel won a Grammy for the score they composed. As the years progressed, Shankar contributed to other albums by Gabriel. He has been performing as a duo with his sister-in-law, the violinist Gingger Shankar (his brother's daughter), since 1996.
