Kronos Quartet Information
Kronos Quartet is a string quartet based in San Francisco consisting of David Harrington, John Sherba, Hank Dutt, and Sunny Yang. David Harrington founded the quartet and performed for the first time in November 1973. Since playing, they have completed over 900 pieces cultivating a long history of commissioning new works.
The Kronos Quartet has worked with many composers so far, including Kevin Volans, Terry Riley, Philip Glass, Roberto Paci Dalo, Steve Reich, Henryk Gorecki, George Crumb, Arvo Part, and John Adams. The Kronos quartet covers a broad range of musical genres such as tango, pre-classical early music, experimental, folk, and Mexican. They have recorded the adaptations of "Purple Haze" of Jimi Hendrix, "Flugufreslsarinn" of Sigur Ros, "Marquee Moon" of Television, "Don't Think Twice. It's All Right" of Bob Dylan, and "Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals" of Raymond Scott.
The Kronos Quartet has published music released in 2007 entitled "Kronos Collection, Vol. 1. Boosey and Hawkes." They worked with many record labels such as Nonesuch/Elektra, Cantaloupe, Dacapo, Landmark, World Circuit, Smithsonian Folkways, Anti, Ondine, and Centrediscs.
Some of the notable studio albums by the quartet include Music of Dane Rudhyar (1979), In Formation (1982), Monk Suite: Kronos Quartet Plays Music of Thelonious Monk (1985), Terry Riley: Cadenza on the Night Plain (1985), Music of Bill Evans (1986), White Man Sleep (1987), Winter Was Hard (1988), Steve Reich: Different Trains/Electric Counterpart (1989), and countless others.
