Kevin Whalum, the son of the Rev. Kenneth T. Whalum, pastor of Olivet Baptist Church in Memphis, is the younger brother of the legendary jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum. Kevin's early life was shaped spiritually and musically by his involvement with the church, which is a magnet for talented singers and musicians. Kevin grew up affected by all he heard and saw in the Olivet community.
Whalum moved to Chicago after graduating from Morehouse College. During the day, he worked as a pharmaceutical salesperson, and in the evenings, he performed with the band Fast Forward. He met his future wife there, and they tied the knot in 1996. Two years later, he relocated to Nashville, the center of a thrilling convergence of gospel, jazz, soul, and folk spearheaded by performers like Tommy Sims and Michael McDonald.
