Kevin Jerome Gilyard (February 5, 1986), known by his stage name Kevin Gates, is a rapper, singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. Currently, he is under contract with the Bread Winners' Association, a record label that collaborates with Atlantic Records. His first studio album, 2016's Islah, reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 list.
Gates had a history of successful mixtape releases before Islah. Stranger Than Fiction (2013), By Any Means (2014), and Luca Brasi 2 (2014) all reached the top 40 on the Billboard 200. On June 28, 2019, Gates released "Push It" and a music video. From his second studio album, "I'm Him," this song was the first to be released as a single.
Gates released his first new music in almost a year on February 19, 2021, with Only the Generals, Pt: II, his seventeenth mixtape. Gates' 2019 EP Only the Generals Gon Understand has a surprise sequel in this project. In 2021, Gates recorded the mixtape in Puerto Rico to honor his ancestors' time spent on the island.
The track "Plug Daughter 2," created by Taz Taylor of Internet Money, is included. Songs like "Puerto Rico Luv" and "Cartel Swag" from the mixtape highlighted his pride in his background and were supported by music videos. Gates has already mentioned his upcoming third studio album, "Khaza."
