Kassa Overall is an American singer, drummer, producer, emcee, and musician. He is a product of New York and currently resides there. Overall was raised in Seattle, Washington, and attended Garfield High School that was the alma mater of Jimi Hendrix and Quincy Jones. His music reflects a panoramic musical background from West Coast G-Funk to the sounds of the New York underground. He has released four projects so far in his career that critics have critically acclaimed.
Overall considers Billy Hard, Billy Higgins, and Elvin Jones as his music mentors. He studied with them at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He has performed with notable artists as a sideman drummer, including Gary Bartz, Carmen Lundy, Peter Evans, Yoko Ono, Francis, and the Lights, Vijay Iyer, and Geri Allen. As a producer, Overall’s work can be heard on albums by Das Racist (Sit Down, Man), Arto Lindsay (Cuidado Madame), and Theo Croker (Escape Velocity).
Kassa Overall has been featured on Terri Lyne Carrington’s project named Social Science. He received a Grammy nomination for that project. His notable singles are “Who’s on the Playlist,” “Visible Walls,” “Landline,” “Show Me a Prison,” “What’s New With You,” “My Friend,” and “I Know You See Me.”
