Karen Brown Information
Karen Brown (1955), also known as Karen "KB" Brown, is an American ballerina, répétiteur, ballet mistress, educator, and director from Okmulgee, Oklahoma. She is well-known for having a long career as a principal dancer with the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Brown is also the first African-American woman to lead a ballet company. As a child, she went to Episcopal Day School and started her ballet studies after turning eight years old. She started to study ballet to aid her habit of falling. Brown was a summer scholarship student at the Joffrey Ballet School and studied with Ron Colton, the former New York City Ballet dancer.
Karen Brown performed with Augusta Civic Ballet for five years, and at the age of 17, she was taken to a ballet festival in Virginia by Colton. Brown was presented with new opportunities at the festival while she was scouted by Karel Shook, Arthur Mitchell's co-founder of Dance Theatre of Harlem. In 1973, she joined Dance Theatre of Harlem as an apprentice and quickly rose to fame.
Some of the notable repertoire by Karen Brown include Geoffrey Holder's Dougla, Bele, and Banda; William Dollar's Mendelssohn's Concerto; David Lichine's Graduation Ball; Arthur Mitchell's Holberg's Suite, John Henry, and The Greatest; Carmen de Lavallade's Sensemaya; Glen Tetley's Voluntaries and Dialogues; Billy Wilson's Ginastera; and Garth Fagan's Footprints Dressed In Red. Karen Brown left Dance Theatre of Harlem at the end of its 1995 season after 22 years of dancing. She joined Atlanta Ballet Center for Dance Education as director of diversity and education.
