Joyce Yang Information
Joyce Yang (April 11, 1986) is a Korean classical pianist from Seoul. Yang started playing piano when she was only four. At that time, she was a piano student to one of her aunts. Her mother took her to New York to play for Yoheved Kaplinsky when she turned nine. There she was accompanied by her teacher aunt as well. The next year, Yang started going to the Korean National Conservatory to study under Choong Mo Kang. She then permanently moved to New York in 1997 to study Juilliard's pre-college division with Kaplinsky. In New York, Yang also went to the Ward Melville High School.
Yang earned a special honor at Juilliard as the Arthur Rubinstein Prize 2010. When Yang was 19, he was awarded the silver medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2005. In this same competition, Yang was able to earn both the Beverley Taylor Smith Award and the Steven De Groote Memorial Award. She won for the Best Performance of Chamber Music category and the Best Performance of a New Work, respectively.
In 2019, the world premiere of Jonathan Leshnoff's Piano Concerto where Joyce Yang performed with the Kansas City Symphony. She performed as a soloist in the orchestra.
