Joyce Didonato Information
Joyce DiDonato is an American lyric-coloratura mezzo-soprano from Prairie Village, Kansas. Born as Joyce Flaherty, she attended St. Ann Catholic School, along with her six siblings. Later on, she went to Bishop Miege High School, where DiDonato sang in musicals. She entered Wichita State University in 1988, where DiDonato studied vocal music education. In her initial stages, she was more interested in teaching high school vocal music and musical theatre. However, later on, DiDonato became interested in opera after seeing Don Giovanni, a PBS telecast.
In her junior year, DiDonato was cast in a school production of Die Fledermaus. After her graduation, she decided to pursue graduate studies at the Academy of Vocal Arts in vocal performance. Soon she was accepted in the Santa Fe Opera's Apprentice Singer program for the 1995 festival season. DiDonato was a part of operas like Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Kálmán's Gräfin Mariza, Richard Strauss' Salome, and the 1994 world premiere of David Lang's Modern Painters. That same year, DiDonato was honored as one of several Outstanding Apprentice Artists by the Santa Fe Opera, and in 1996, she became part of Houston Grand Opera's young artist program.
DiDonato began her professional career in 1998/1999, singing opera in several notable companies around the US. Her notable film and television appearances include Rosina in Rossini's The Barber of Seville, Last Night of the Proms, Royal Albert Hall, London, and Narrator in documentary Maria by Callas (2017).
Her notable roles in operas are Adina, Adina (Rossini), Alcina, Alcina (Handel), Dejanira, Hercules (Handel), Isabella, L'italiana in Algeri (Rossini), to name a few. DiDonato won several awards and honors such as 2010: ECHO Klassik Award for Singer of the Year, 2012: Gramophone's Hall of Fame, 2014 Mu Phi Epsilon Award of Merit, and 2018: Handel Prize.
