Jon Nakamatsu Information
Jon Nakamatsu (1968) is an American classical pianist. He was born in San Jose, California. He was born and raised near Mountain View in Sunnyvale, California. He earned degrees from Prospect High School and Stanford University before beginning his career as a German instructor at St. Francis High School.
At the tenth annual Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas, in June 1997, Nakamatsu took first place and the gold medal. Since 1981, he was the first American to take home this award. He promptly left his position as a high school German instructor after the competition to concentrate on his classical piano career. He did not pursue music as a major in undergraduate or graduate school or attend a music conservatory.
Nakamatsu performed the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 with the San Jose Youth Symphony on tour in Spain in the summer of 2005 and again with the Peninsula Youth Orchestra in Budapest, Prague, and Teplice in June 2007. In the summer of 2008, he took the Stanford Symphony Orchestra on tour to China, where they performed "Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin.
