John Mayall Information
John Mayall, OBE (November 29, 1933) is an English guitarist, blues singer, organist, and songwriter. He is from Macclesfield, England, with a musical career that spans over sixty years. He is the son of Murray Mayall, who was also a guitarist and jazz music enthusiast. From a very young age, John was interested in the sounds of American blues players such as Albert Ammons, Pinetop Smith, Lead Belly, and Eddie Lang. He taught himself how to play the piano and harmonica.
John Mayall spent around three years in Korea for national service. When he was on leave, he bought his very first guitar. After returning, John enrolled himself at Manchester College of Art (now part of Manchester Metropolitan University). He opted for a full-time musician job in 1963 and moved to London. Early in 1956, John founded the Powerhouse Four band along with his college fellow Peter Ward. He also became a member of the Blues Syndicate in 1962. The band was later named d Bluesbreakers.
A few of the early releases by the group include "Crawling Up a Hill," "Mr. James," and a few more. Some of the other discographies by the Bluesbreakers include Looking Back, Primal Solos, Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton, A Hard Road, The Blues Alone, Crusade, Bare Wires, Empty Rooms, Back to the Roots (1971), New Year, New Band, New Company (1975), Return of the Bluesbreakers (1985), In the Palace of the King (2007), and several more.
The New York Times Magazine listed John Mayall on June 25, 2019, among those hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal brush fire. Blues From Laurel Canyon: My Life As A Bluesman, in Mayall's autobiography, which is co-written with author Joel McIver. Omnibus Press published it in August 2019.
