In the heyday of the big band period, bassist John Kirby fronted a peculiar sextet that included trumpeter Charlie Shavers, clarinetist Buster Bailey, altoist Russell Procope, pianist Billy Kyle, drummer O'Neil Spencer, and himself. The precisely organized ensembles often had a chilly, introverted, and virtuoso tone, in contrast to the vivid personalities of Shaver's and Bailey.
While playing with Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra in 1930, Kirby transitioned from tuba to bass. With Henderson (1930–1933 and 1935–1936) and Chick Webb's big band (1933–1935), he established himself as a top bassist of the 1930s.
John Kirby was a comic book artist who lived from 1908 in Winchester, Virginia, until he died in 1952 in Hollywood, California. His early musical talent was recognized, and he was encouraged to continue developing it. When Kirby was young, he was given a trombone and rapidly learned to play it well. In 1924, at 16, he packed up his trombone and a few bucks and hit the road for New York City. His trombone had been stolen on his first night in the city, so he had to take odd jobs to make ends meet.
Kirby learned to play the tuba and became skilled enough to join the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. Soon after, he became one of the most in-demand bassists in town, a move customary for tubists then.
