John Gorka Information
John Gorka (July 27, 1958) is an American singer and songwriter. He was born in Colonia, New Jersey. Gorka recruited Doug Anderson and Russ Rentler to join him in what would become the Razzy Dazzy Spasm Band, and guitarist Richard Shindell later joined the group. His solo performances at Godfrey Daniels coffee restaurant in South Bethlehem followed his graduation from Moravian, where he had previously served as an opening act for the likes of Nanci Griffith, Bill Morrissey, Claudia Schmidt, and Jack Hardy. A finalist in the New Folk competition at the 1984 Kerrville Folk Festival, Gorka was ultimately selected as one of six winners.
Since then, he has been making regular trips to the Americas and Europe. I Know, Gorka's debut album, was released in 1987. Red House put out the record, marking the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with the company. After Yesterday (1998) marked his return to Red House, where he would stay for the next twenty years, resulting in eight albums, the most recent of which is 2016's True in Time. Before that, he had spent the previous five years with Windham Hill and High Street (2018).
In the past, he has shared the stage alongside the likes of Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, Michael Manring, Christine Lavin, Dave Van Ronk, Cliff Eberhardt, David Massengill, Frank Christian, Antje Duvekot, Meg Hutchinson, and Lucy Kaplansky. In 2010, he teamed with Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson to form the folk ensemble Red Horse, performing on one other's albums and touring together. Up until July 2014, Red Horse was on tour.
