Joey Defrancesco Information
Joey DeFrancesco (April 10, 1971) is an American jazz trumpeter, vocalist, and organist. He was born in Springfield, Pennsylvania. DeFrancesco started playing the organ when he was just four years old. By the time he was 5, he had played songs by Jimmy Smith verbatim. He joined a band in Philadelphia at the age of 10. The band included jazz musicians Philly Joe Jones and Hank Mobley. He also opened shows for the B.B. King and Wynton Marsalis. DeFrancesco attended the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts.
DeFrancesco signed an exclusive record deal with Columbia Records when he was 16 years old. He released his first record the following year entitled “All of Me.” He was also part of the five-week concert tour in Europe for the band of Miles Davis. The sound of Davis inspired him, so almost the same time, he began playing the trumpet. With Columbia Records, he released five overall albums, including Where Were You (1990), Part III (1991), Reboppin (1992), and Live at the 5 Spot in (1993).
DeFrancesco started touring at the age of 18 with his quartet. He also began collaborating with John McLaughlin, who was a former guitarist for Mahavishnu and Miles Davis. DeFrancesco has been nominated for Grammy Awards in the years 2004 and 2010. He is a 9-time winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll (organ). He has also won the Down Beat Readers Poll every year since 2005. His achievements also include several JazzTimes Awards.
