Joe Mazzaferro Quintet Information
The Sacramento-based jazz scene in Northern California is home to trumpeter, educator, and composer Joe Mazzaferro, who is also in demand as a guest performer and clinician all around the country. Mazzaferro's debut album, In Terms Of... (Joe Mazz Music), In November 2017 and featured saxophone Jeff Clayton, special guest drummer Carl Allen, and pianist Donald Brown. The album earned excellent reviews from jazz critics and debuted at 43 on the JazzWeek Charts.
He received his Bachelor in Music Education from the University of the Pacific and his Master's in Jazz and Studio Music from the University of Tennessee, where he worked as a Graduate TA for the jazz program. He frequently composed arrangements for the UT Jazz Ensemble. Joe studied improvisation and composition at the University of Tennessee under the tutelage of Mark Boling, Vance Thompson, and former Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers pianist Donald Brown.
At the University of the Pacific's Conservatory of Music, Joe is currently the Associate Director of Jazz Studies. Before being hired, he held positions at CSU Sacramento, San Joaquin-Delta College, and CSU Sacramento as the coordinator of jazz studies. Mazzaferro also serves on the California Alliance for Jazz and the Capital Jazz Project boards, and he routinely teaches at Cazadero Music Camp and the Brubeck Institute's Summer Jazz Colony (Sacramento).
