Janiva Magness Information
Janiva Magness is a soul, American, and blues singer and songwriter. Magness was born in the city of Detroit in the state of Michigan. The music first influenced Magness in her father’s record collection, but she went to an Otis Rush concert in Minneapolis when she was younger, which transformed her life. While studying to be an engineer, she worked in a recording studio in Saint Paul, Minnesota, when she was forced to do some backing vocals.
Magness’ debut album, More Than Live, was out in 1991, and her second, It Takes One to Know One, came out in 1997. Magness appeared in the David Geffen Theater in Westwood, Los Angeles, in a stage version of It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues in 1999.
Magness released three independent albums before being signed to a recording contract with NorthernBlues Music. Bury Him at the Crossroads was released in 2004, and Do I Move You? was released in 2005. (2006). Magness and Colin Linden co-produced both albums, with the former garnering them a Canadian Maple Blues Award for Producers Of The Year. “Do I Move You?” debuted at number eight on Billboard’s Blues Album Chart.
Magness signed with Alligator Records in 2008 and released What Love Will Do. In 2010, The Devil Is an Angel Too was released, followed by Stronger for It in 2012. The latter included some of her compositions, marking the first time since her debut album in 1997 that she had done so. Magness has appeared at several music festivals, including Notodden Blues Festival (in 2007 and 2008), Memphis in May (in 2006 and 2010), and Byron Bay Bluesfest (in 2006 and 2010). (2016). In 2017, she performed at the Mahindra Blues Festival in Mumbai, India.
