James Ehnes Information
James Ehnes (January 27, 1976) is a Canadian concert violist and violinist from Brandon, Manitoba. He is the son of Barbara Withey Ehnes. His mother was the former ballerina with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Chicago Ballet, and Ruth Page's International Ballet, along with a former director of the Brandon School of Dance; and Alan Ehnes. His father was a long time trumpet professor at Brandon University, Canada. Ehnes started learning the violin at the age of four. He became a protégé of the noted Canadian violinist Francis Chaplin at the age of nine. Ehnes used to study with Sally Thomas at the Meadowmount School of Music. Later from 1993 to 1997, he attended The Juilliard School and won the Peter Mennin Prize for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music when he graduated.
James Ehnes won a Doctor of Music degree (honoris causa) in October 2005 from Brandon University. Later, in July 2007, he became the youngest person ever to be selected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Ehnes was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2010.
