James Conlon Information
James Conlon (March 18, 1950) is an American conductor. He was born in New York City. When he was eleven, he saw the North Shore Opera's rendition of La Traviata. He enrolled in voice lessons and soon found himself singing as a treble (boy soprano) with a Queens-based opera company. At first, he wanted to be a tenor, then a baritone, and eventually, he even imagined himself performing the role of Carmen. He eventually realized that becoming an opera conductor was his only option.
Conlon won the American National Orchestral Association's conducting award and made history in 1974 as the youngest conductor ever hired for a subscription series performance with the New York Philharmonic. In 1976, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, and in 1979, he made his debut at Covent Garden. He became the festival's director in 1979 and stayed in that role until 2016.
Since 2006–2007, Conlon has served as the Los Angeles Opera's music director. Among Conlon's many contributions to the organization is the "Recovered Voices" series, a multi-year effort in which the authors of operas devastated by the Third Reich performed their works. Operas by composers like Schreker and Braunfels were performed alongside works by Alexander von Zemlinsky (The Giant) and Viktor Ullmann (The Broken Krug).
