James Carter Information
James Carter (January 3, 1969) is an American jazz musician from Detroit, Michigan. He is the cousin of Regina Carter, jazz violinist. Carter learned to play the guitar under the tutelage of Donald Washington. He later became a member of his youth jazz ensemble Bird-Trane-Sco-NOW!!. Carter attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. He turned out to be the youngest faculty member at the camp. Carter first toured Europe (Scandinavia) along with the International Jazz Band, when he was only 16, in 1985.
Carter was a last-minute addition for guest artist Lester Bowie, at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), on May 31, 1988. This turned him to get invited to play with his new quintet (forerunner of his New York Organ Ensemble) in New York City at the now-defunct Carlos 1 jazz club (following November). This point resulted in Carter's career that put him in musical contact with the world. Two years later, he moved to New York and date, Carter is a prominent performer and recording artist on the jazz scene since the late 1980s. He is an expert when it comes to playing the saxophones, flute, and clarinets.
Tough Young Tenors: Alone Together was the debut album by Carter released in 1991. It was followed by 1994: JC on the Set, 1995: The Real Quiet Storm, 2000: Chasin' the Gypsy, 2005: Gold Sounds, 2009: Heaven on Earth, 2011: Caribbean Rhapsody, 2019: Live From Newport Jazz, and the list goes on. As a sideman, Carter performed with Karrin Allyson (Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane), the Art Ensemble of Chicago (Salutes the Chicago Blues Tradition), and many others. Carter has won Down Beat magazine's Critics and Readers Choice award many times in a row.
