Jacam Manricks Information
Jacam Manricks is a saxophonist, soloist, and composer who is Sri Lankan/Portuguese Australian born. He was raised in a musical family, and his parents were resident classical musicians in his hometown of Brisbane. His grandfather was also a famous Portuguese saxophonist and jazz clarinetist in Sri Lanka. Jacam frequently attended his parents’ symphony concerts as a child. With the help of his father’s jazz collection, he was introduced to jazz at home, and, from a very young age, Jacam built a diverse musical foundation.
At the age of 5, Jacam started to study piano, and by the age of 9, he was already learning the saxophone. In 2007, he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in JazzArts from the Manhattan School of Music. As a woodwind player and saxophonist, Jacam has performed and/or recorded with some of the most well-known international artists. He has also performed at big venues such as Cornelia Street Café, Smalls, the Jazz Standard, the Jazz Gallery, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Jacam has recorded six albums as a composer, soloist and ensemble leader. His albums include Labyrinth, Trigonometry; Sky’s the Limit, Chamber Jazz, Could Nine, and GilMan tricks. His music has been highly praised in major jazz magazines across the US, Italy, Ireland, Germany, Canada, France, Australia, and New Zealand.
Jacam has also received several prestigious awards and scholarships for artistic excellence and touring, including the 2008-2010 Contemporary Music Touring Program awards, 2011 International Pathways Touring Grant, and Queensland Lord Mayors Performing Arts Fellowship.
