Iskwe Information
iskwe (1981) is a Canadian singer, activist, and songwriter. She was born in Minnipeg, Manitoba. Since the release of her self-titled debut album, for which she received a WCMA nomination, an integral component of iskw's artistic vision has been to bridge cross-cultural aesthetics while examining her own battle to fit into and break free from current Western clichés. 2013 saw the release of her self-titled debut album.
Her first hit, "Nobody Knows," was featured on the Netflix show Between and was created by Juno Award nominees The Darcys, drawing attention to the more than 1,200 missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada. After releasing their debut album, iskw followed it up with a string of singles before releasing The Fight Within. In 2018, her song "Healers" was nominated for a SOCAN Songwriting Prize. As well as being longlisted for the 2018 Polaris Music Prize and receiving a Juno Award nomination for Indigenous Music Album of the Year, The Fight Within also won the 2017 Western Canadian Music Awards (WCMA) for Electronic/Dance Artist of the Year.
It was on November 8th, 2019 when the third album by iskw, titled ackosk, was made available to the public. Her song "Breaking Down" was nominated for the 2020 SOCAN Songwriting Prize and the video PRISM Prize, while the music video for the album's lead single, "Little Star," directed by Sarah Legault, earned a Juno Award for Music Video of the Year.
