Ira Nathaniel "Nate" Smith is an American producer, drummer, and songwriter. He was born in Chesapeake, Virginia. At 11, he began playing drums, first finding inspiration in rock and funk. After hearing Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers' Album of the Year when he was 16, he became interested in jazz. At James Madison University, Smith majored in media art and design. After performing at the International Association for Jazz Education Conference in Atlanta while attending James Madison University, he connected with Betty Carter. She later invited him to perform with her at New York City's Blue Note.
After completing his Ph.D. studies at VCU, Smith joined Dave Holland's quintet in 2003. Two albums by Smith feature his work, Critical Mass (2005) and Pathways (2009). Kinfolk: Postcards from Everywhere, his debut album as a band leader, was published by Ropeadope Records in 2017. Smith co-wrote and participated in the Vulfpeck spin-off group's self-titled debut EP release in 2018, then toured the US with them and released a second such EP in 2019.
Smith has provided original music for televised documentaries on Discovery and The Learning Channels. He collaborated with Michael Jackson on "Heaven Can Wait" and was responsible for its production.
