Incantation Information
Traditional tribal and other South American music is what Incantation specializes in. The band's origins may be traced back to 1981 when a group of musicians who had previously performed with the London-based (then) Ballet Rambert got together to form a full orchestra. Using the music of the exiled Chilean folk group Inti-Illimani, a new dance was constructed (entitled "Ghost Dances") about political tyranny in South America. Six band members donated their services because the company favored using live musicians (rather than tapes) for performances.
Acquiring and spending time mastering the use of real instruments was a priority. Coda Records, a division of Beggars Banquet Records, quickly offered the band a recording contract after the event's success. The band decided to call itself Incantation, after the Inca word for sacred music.
Scottish native Tony Hinnigan, Irishman Mike Taylor, Englishman Forbes Henderson, Englishman Simon Rogers, Englishman Chris Swithinbank, Chilean natives Claudia Figuerora, Sergio Avila, and Mauricio Venegas have all been members of the band at various points in their history. They had a top twenty hit with "Cacharpaya (Andes Pumpsa Daesi)" on the UK Singles Chart in 1982.
