Igor Levit Information
Igor Levit (March 10, 1987) is a Russian-German pianist. Levit was born into a Jewish family in Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod) and began playing the piano at three. He received his initial successes in his hometown on the concert stage as a child. In 1995, his family relocated to Hanover. He studied with Hans Leygraf at the Mozarteum in Salzburg from 1999 to 2000, and Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, Matti Raekallio, and Bernd Goetzke at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover from 2000 to 2010.
Levit has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals. During his studies, he won second prize in the International Maria Callas Grand Prix in Athens (2004), first prize in the 9th Hamamatsu International Piano Academy Competition in Hamamatsu (2004), second prize in the piano competition Kissinger Klavierolymp (2004), and the silver medal and three other awards at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Tel Aviv (2005).
In October 2011, Levit was featured in a 45-minute documentary on 3sat about his passion for Franz Liszt's music. From 2011 to 2013, he was a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist. Levit has been appointed as a professor at Hannover's Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien. Levit contributed a cover of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" to The Metallica Blacklist, a charity tribute album, in 2021.
