Helstar Information
Helstar is a heavy metal band formed in 1982 by guitarist Larry Barragan in Houston, Texas. The current lineup consists of James Rivera (vocals), Larry Barragan (guitar), Michael Lewis (drums), Garrick Smith (bass), and Andrew Atwood (guitar). The band started playing with a basic heavy metal style in 1983 with two demos followed by their first studio album released in 1984—the album entitled “Burning Star” on Combat Records.
In December 1985, Helstar played its first arena show. It was an opening act that took place at the Sam Houston Coliseum for Stryper. The group moved to Los Angeles for some time in 1987 with some variations in their lineup.
In 1988, Helstar returned to Houston and signed with Metal Blade Records. They recorded their first album on the label “A Distant Thunder,” produced by Bill Metoyer. The group has also toured with different acts as openers, including Armored Saint, Exodus, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Yngwie Malmsteen.
Helstar released another album in 1989 entitled “Nosferatu.” The group went on another tour to promote their album, and right after returning, it recorded a four-song demo. The band continued to release more albums, including Multiples of Black (1995), Twas The Night of a Helish Xmas (2000), Sins of the Past (2007), and The King of Hell (2008).
