Grieg Concerto Information
Written in 1868 while Grieg was taking advantage of the climate in Sllerd, Denmark, the piece is considered one of his early significant works.
The concerto is often compared to Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto because they share the same key, have comparable opening descending flourishes on the piano, and have a similar style. It's interesting to note that each artist only produced a single piano concerto. Grieg was taught the piano by Schumann's friend Ernst Ferdinand Wenzel, and after hearing Clara Schumann perform Schumann's concerto in Leipzig in 1858, Grieg was profoundly affected by Schumann's style.
The opening flourish of Grieg's concerto, based on the motif of a falling minor second followed by a falling major third, is characteristic of the folk music of Grieg's home Norway and thus demonstrates the composer's interest in that genre. You can also find this theme in Grieg's String Quartet No. 1.
Edmund Neupert gave the piece's first performance on April 3, 1869, in Copenhagen, with Holger Simon Paulli at the helm. According to some accounts, Grieg was supposed to play the piano solo in the debut, but he had to play with an orchestra in Christiania instead.
