Gladys Knight Information
Gladys Maria Knight (May 28, 1944), known as the "Empress of Soul," is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman. She was born in Atlanta. Knight won seven Grammy Awards, and Gladys Knight & the Pips, had hits in the 1960s - 1980s. It comprised her siblings, Merald "Bubba" Knight, and uncles William Guest and Edward Patten.
She won a prize on Ted Mack's TV show, The Original Amateur Hour, on July 1, 1952, when she was only eight. Knight started singing with her brother Bubba, her sister Brenda, and their uncles Eleanor and William Guest.
Knight made her starring debut in the 1976 film Pipe Dreams as the main character. For this role, she received a nomination for the Golden Globes for New Star of the Year—Actress.
When The Pips discovered that "Every Beat of My Heart" had become a hit but that the group wasn't getting any additional funds, they re-recorded the song. Both versions were on the Billboard charts, with the original version getting to no.6 on the Hot 100. Before the reissue on Fury Records, the band changed the title to Gladys Knight & the Pips.
In 2019, Knight was asked to play at the Delaware State Fair, celebrating its 100th year. Knight received the Kennedy Center Honors from U.S. President Joe Biden in 2022. She was also the main speaker at a dinner for U.S. and African leaders at the White House.
