Gautier Capucon Information
Gautier Capucon (September 3, 1981) is a French cellist. He was born in Chambery, Savoie. At age four, he began studying the cello. At the Ecole Nationale de Musique de Chambéry, in his hometown, he began his official musical study and went on to win first prizes in both cello and piano.
After being discovered in Chambéry, he began his cello studies in Paris with Annie Cochet-Zakine, from whom he later received a full scholarship to the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris (CNR), from which he graduated first in his class in 1997. He enrolled at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (CNSMP). He studied cello with renowned instructor Philippe Muller, eventually earning first-place awards in cello and chamber music upon graduation in 2000. Soon after, he graduated from Vienna's University of Music and Performing Arts, where he studied with Heinrich Schiff.
The piano is another one of his many talents. A student of Christophe Egiziano's at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris, he took up the piano at seven. As a hobby, he enjoys playing jazz piano. He works with young learners in the Classe d'Excellence du Fondation Louis Vuitton. For many years, Gautier Capuçon recorded exclusively for Virgin Classics (a division of EMI). He made an album in 2015 for Warner Music Group's Erato label.
