Fugees Information
Fugees is an American hip-hop group. The current lineup consists of Pras Michel, Wyclef Jean, and Lauryn Hill. In the early 1990s, it was founded by Wyclef Jean. The group comprises Pras Michel and Lauryn Hill, and its name is derived from a contraction of the term "refugees." The group's second album, The Score (1996), became one of the best-selling albums of all time. The group is largely considered one of the most important alternative hip hop groups of the 1990s.
The group signed with Ruffhouse Records, distributed by Columbia Records in 1993. The group released Blunted on Reality in 1994, which received largely positive reviews. It featured the Salaam Remi-remixed underground singles "Nappy Heads" and "Vocab." It was followed up with The Score (1996), their second and final studio album, a huge success, reaching the number one spot on the US Billboard 200 chart and being certified seven times platinum in the US.
The Fugees have sold over 22 million albums worldwide, making them one of the best-selling hip-hop groups. In 2007, MTV ranked it as the ninth finest hip-hop group of all time. They've been branded "the hip hop Beatles" by Bono of U2. BET named the group to their "Hip Hop's Greatest Trios" list in 2012. Two Grammy Awards and a Brit Award for International Group are among the Fugees' accolades.
