Four Tops Information
The Four Tops is an American vocal quartet. They consist of Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Ronnie McNeir, Lawrence Payton Jr., and Alexander Morris. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & the Vocal Group Hall of Fame inducted the band in 1990 and 1999, respectively. They were ranked no on Rolling Stone's 2004 list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. 79. Fakir keeps the Four Tops strong as the last remaining original member.
During this time, the band was the subject of numerous television specials, such as Motown 45, and numerous PBS specials, as well as a 50th-anniversary concert devoted to the band (which is now available on DVD). The performance was bittersweet because it was a tribute to Lawrence Payton, proclaimed by Renaldo "Obie" Benson, and it included a short wheelchair cameo by Levi Stubbs. Before his death from lung cancer on July 1, 2005, Benson made one final appearance on a PBS show.
In the 2011 American League Championship Series (ALCS) between the Texas Rangers and the Detroit Tigers, the Four Tops sang the national anthem before game 5 began on October 13, 2011, in Detroit, MI. At the inaugural ceremony, which took place on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at Cleveland State University's Waetejen Auditorium, the Four Tops were inducted into the R&B Music Hall of Fame.
