Flipper Information
Flipper is an American punk rock band. The group's current lineup consists of Ted Falconi, Steve DePace, and Mike Watt. Although he is credited with coming up with the band's name, initial lead singer Williams was let go before the group recorded an album. With Williams' departure, Bruce "Loose" Calderwood stepped in, and he and Shatter took turns switching between singing lead and playing bass onstage. The distorted guitar sound that Falconi, a Vietnam War vet, created was all his own.
After releasing his debut single, "Love Canal"/"Ha Ha Ha" on Subterranean Records in 1980, Flipper's initial recordings came on the SF Underground 7-inch EP in late 1979. The "Sex Bomb"/"Brainwash" single came out in 1981 and had custom-made sleeves for each copy sold. The band became well-known in the punk scene thanks to the success of their extended A-side, which featured little words.
The band had a sizable local fan base in the San Francisco region and played there frequently. At the same time, the rising popularity of faster-paced hardcore punk made the other members of the local punk scene angry with their own sluggish and rowdy take on the genre. According to Mark Arm, Flipper's appeal as a band lay in their ability to simultaneously shock audiences while gaining their complete attention and curiosity, as seen in the documentary American Hardcore (2006).
