Fetty Wap (June 7, 1991) is an American singer, songwriter, and rapper. He is originally known as Willie Junior Maxwell II. He grew up in Paterson, New Jersey. Maxwell was born with glaucoma in both eyes that was diagnosed in 2015. Doctors couldn’t save his left eye, so he had to go through an ocular prosthesis.
In 2013, Fetty Wap started taking interest in music. He began his career as a rapper but soon began singing as well. He got the nickname; Fetty, as he was known for making money and Fetty, means slang for money. He added Wap to his nickname, Fetty, when he was tributing GuWop of Gucci Mane alias.
Fetty Wap released his first commercial debut single “ Trap Queen” in 2014. The song was recorded in February 2014. Till November 2014, the song didn’t get much recognition, but since then, it has been a platinum record, and on SoundCloud, the song has over 130 million plays. He was included in the Freshman Class of XXL 2015.
Wap released his second single “679” on June 29, 2015. The single peaked at number 4 on the Hot 100 top 10. He matched Billboard marks by the prominent artists of the hip-hop music industry, such as Lil Wayne and Eminem, from July 26, 2015, to August 1, 2015.
Fetty Wap released his self-titled debut studio album on September 25, 2015. The album topped the Billboard 200. It sold over 129,000 units. In December 2016, Fetty Wap featured Nicki Minaj in his song “Like a Star.”
