In 2003, three Tempe, Arizona musicians formed Eyes Set to Kill. A sentence inspired their name in a poem that Alexia Rodriguez penned in high school, and the band consists of Alexia Rodriguez (lead guitar, backing vocals), Anissa Rodriguez (bass), and Lindsey Vogt (lead vocals). The band's lineup would continue to shift throughout the following months.
At Larry Elyea's Mind's Eye Digital Recording Studios in Glendale, Arizona, in the early months of 2006, Alex Torres (rhythm guitar), Corey Pattakos (backing vocals), and Caleb Clifton (drums) teamed together to produce a nine-song EP titled When Silence Is Broken, the Night Is Torn. The EP sold 11,000 copies and featured Alex Torres on guitar and Lindsey Vogt on vocals. Released on February 19, 2008, their first full-length album, Reach, peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and No. 77 on the Independent Music rankings that year, with 1,900 copies sold.
The album's first single, "Reach," was followed by "Darling." On June 2, 2009, they released their second studio album, The World Outside. According to Nielsen SoundScan, it debuted at #9 on the Billboard Heatseekers list and #26 on the Independent Albums chart, with initial sales of 2,400 copies in the United States.
