Everette Harp Information
Everette Harp (August 17, 1961) is an American jazz saxophonist. He was born in Houston, Texas. As the last born of eight kids, Everette Harp always felt like a baby. His parents were in the ministry; his dad preached, and his mom played the organ. Early on, he was influenced by gospel music. He first learned jazz while attending Marshall Junior High and studying with drummer Buddy Smith. In the early 1980s, he studied music at North Texas State University after attending Robert "Doc" Morgan's High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Houston.
He became a Phi Beta Sigma fraternity member when he was there. After a brief stint as an accountant, Harp began performing in bands around Houston, including the jazz/funk outfit The Franchise, who in 1987 issued an album featuring the first recording of Harp's "There's Still Hope." Following a brief tour with Teena Marie and Anita Baker, he settled in Los Angeles in 1988. Only two years later did George Duke put him under contract with Capitol Records for his band 101 North. When Blue Note Records' Bruce Lundvall heard Harp, he quickly signed her to a solo deal before the record ever came out.
Blue Note published Duke Snider's 1992 CD, including Harp. For the Montreux Jazz Festival, Duke sponsored a performance by Harp. He was a regular on Arsenio Hall's talk show. After appearing on John Tesh's Sax by the Fire, he was invited to play on the show's theme song for Tesh's Entertainment Tonight.
