ESG Information
ESG, or Emerald, Sapphire, & Gold, is a funk rock band. The original lineup consists of Tito Libran (congas and vocals), Marie (congas and vocals), Deborah (bass), Valerie (drums), Renee (vocals), and the Scroggins sisters. After their performance at Hurrah on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Tony Wilson from Factory Records approached the band. Three days later, they were in Manchester, England, recording with Martin Hannett. They got the first take of "Moody" and "You're No Good" recorded. Since Hannett still had three minutes of space on the master tape, he decided to record "UFO" with the band.
Their first EP, 1982's ESG Says Dance to the Beat of Moody, and their debut album, 1983's Come Away with ESG, carried on in a similar vein. Renee Scroggins owns all of the intellectual property for the upcoming ESG material. Famous hip-hop acts like TLC, Wu-Tang Clan, Kool Moe Dee, Beastie Boys, Big Daddy Kane, Gang Starr, Junior Mafia, Tricky, Jay-Dee, and many more have sampled the group's work.
The music of ESG combines funk, hip-hop, and punk styles. Renee Scroggins has stated that the Latin music she and her sisters grew up with in the neighborhood is a major inspiration for ESG's style.
