With her new album Meet Me In The Middle, released now on VizzTone/Juicy Juju Records, Erin Harpe joyously embraces her inner acoustic blues woman. In an otherwise bleak period, this record is a beacon of hope. Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers is the electric blues foursome led by the Boston-based multi-band leader, producer, indie label owner, singer-songwriter, and guitarist, who is also married to the band's other co-owner, bass player Jim Countryman.
This group has put out three critically acclaimed CDs. Lovewhip, a neo-new-wave Afro-pop band the pair co-founded, has released four albums to widespread acclaim. Harpe has released two acoustic blues CDs and often performs with Jim as a combo they've jokingly dubbed "CBD," or the Country Blues Duo. Women of the Country Blues Guitar, taught by Harpe, was released in 2016 by the highly regarded Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop.
Piedmont blues, a syncopated, fingerpicked version of the blues popularized in the East Coast region by artists like Blind Blake and Josh White, and subsequently Rev. Gary Davis and Cephas & Wiggins, is the first music Harpe remembers hearing. After hearing Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant," featuring Piedmont guitar accompaniment, Harpe decided to try the technique.
