Eric Mintel Quartet is an American group. The current lineup consists of Eric Mintel (piano), Nelson Hill (sax and flute), Jack Hegyi (bass), and Dave Mohn (drums). If you're a jazz enthusiast in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, you've undoubtedly heard of pianist Eric Mintel. He started his foursome in 1993 and has since received numerous honors, including a performance at the White House and a guest appearance on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz on NPR in 2005. He is a naturally brilliant pianist who studied Brubeck's "Take Five" during his initial piano lessons. Mintel's eighth studio album is Just Around The Corner and showcases the musician at his finest.
Except for the bubbling "That Happy Feeling," Mintel stays away from Brubeck licks in favor of playing contemporary tunes that seem to belong on any of pianist David Benoit's mainstream jazz albums. The upbeat title track sets the tone, but the 7+ minute exercise "Just Happened," spiced with a gratifying bass n' drum groove, really sticks with you. Among the other favorites is "Heart of the Holidays," adapted to fit a December playlist but retains its originality and charm.
