English Baroque Soloists Information
The English Baroque Soloists, under English conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner, are a chamber orchestra performing on period instruments since 1978. It performs works from the early Baroque era through the Classical era. It was in 1968 that John Eliot Gardiner founded the Monteverdi Orchestra, from which the English Baroque Soloists grew. Along with Gardiner's Monteverdi Choir was the Monteverdi Orchestra, which featured modern instruments.
The orchestra was renamed the English Baroque Soloists and began performing on period instruments in the late 1970s. Although not officially founded until 1978, the orchestra's first performance under its new name occurred in 1977 at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music. The Monteverdi Choir, directed by John Eliot Gardiner, frequently collaborates with the English Baroque Soloists.
The Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique was another of Gardiner's period instrument ensembles that he founded in 1990. There are certain overlaps between the English Baroque Soloists and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, two ensembles that focus on music from later periods.
