Emanuel Ax Information
Emanuel "Manny" Ax (June 8, 1949) is an American classical pianist born in Lviv, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union, and has won a Grammy. The Juilliard School employs him as an instructor. His honorary doctorates in music from Columbia University and Yale University were bestowed to him in May 2007 and May 2007, respectively. The Sanford Medal from Yale University was bestowed on him.
Joachim and Hellen Ax were born into a Polish-Jewish family in Lviv, Ukraine, part of the Soviet Union. At six years old, Ax started taking piano lessons from his father.
Century Rolls by John Adams, Seeing by Christopher Rouse, and Red Silk Dance by Bright Sheng are three world premieres that Ax has presented recently, demonstrating their support for contemporary composers. Traditional composers like Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin are performed alongside contemporary composers like Paul Hindemith, Hans Werner Henze, Joseph Schwantner, and Arnold Schoenberg.
On August 3, 1973, at the Marlboro Music School and Festival, Ax and cellist Yo-Yo Ma gave their first public presentation as a duo. Their discography includes several cello and piano compositions performed in tandem. In addition to his work with Ma, Ax temporarily performed in quartets with violinists Isaac Stern and Jaime Laredo.
