Elgin Symphony Orchestra Information
The Elgin Symphony Orchestra is a regional orchestra founded in 1950, headquartered in Elgin, Illinois. Andrew Grams is the music director for the orchestra. He was named the 2015 Conductor of the Year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras. The seasons of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra include approximately 40 performances annually, which include Educational Programming, Classics, Pops, and Holiday performances.
Douglas Steensland founded the Elgin Symphony Orchestra at Elgin Community College. Since 2004, the concertmaster for the orchestra has been Isabella Lippi. Over the years, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra has engaged with several world-renowned musicians such as Janos Starker, Pepe Romero, Midori Goto, Benny Goodman, Yo-Yo Ma, Sir James Galway, Kathleen Battle, Jennifer Koh, Alisa Weilerstein, Midori Goto, Rachel Barton Pine, and a few more. Some of the notable guest conductors include Rossen Milanov, Giancarlo Guerrero, and Ignat Solzhenitsyn.
In 2006, the symphony began its Holiday Showcase at the Sears Centre Arena. This turned out to be an annual event for three straight years. The event brings hosts such as Jodi Benson, Doug LaBrecque, Cirque du Soleil aerialists and jugglers, and many more. One of the highest-profile events by the Elgin Symphony Orchestra was the Planets Gala Concert with Leonard Nimoy. The orchestra released its first commercially recorded album featuring music by Aaron Copland on the Naxos label in 2008.
