Elgar Cello Concerto Information
One of the most important pieces of solo cello music is the Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85, composed by Edward Elgar. Elgar wrote it after the First World War when his music was unpopular among concertgoers. The Cello Concerto is largely reflective and melancholy, contrasting Elgar's earlier impassioned and lyrical Violin Concerto.
Due to little rehearsal time, Elgar and the performers had a disastrous premiere in October 1919. Elgar recorded the piece twice with Beatrice Harrison performing solo. From Pablo Casals onward, top cellists have performed and recorded this work. Still, it wasn't until Jacqueline du Pré's recording in the 1960s that it became a classical bestseller, and the work became widely popular.
For their 2022 discographic survey, the German publication Fono Forum suggests albums with solo performances by Harrison, du Pré, Tortelier, Robert Cohen, Michaela Fukacová, Daniel Müller-Schott, and Watkins.
