Eighth Blackbird Information
English Blackbird is an American contemporary music sextet. The group's lineup consists of Lisa Kaplan, Zachary Good, Matthew Duvali, Maiani da Silva, Ashley Bathgate, and Lina Andonovska. The members of Eighth Blackbird first met at Tim Weiss's Contemporary Music Ensemble at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where the group was initially founded. Many of the performers in the ensemble attribute the group's formation to Weiss, as well as the fact that he constantly pushed them to remember and choreograph their performances.
The group was recognized as one of the best chamber groups in the United States when they took home the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition's top prize in 1996. The group won the Concert Artists Guild competition two years later while they were all still undergraduates at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. The band has released over a dozen critically acclaimed albums throughout its lengthy recording career, most of which have been released on Chicago's Cedille Records.
The album "Strange Imaginary Animals," released in 2006, received two Grammys in 2008, including Best Chamber Music Performance. Eighth Blackbird collaborated with composer Steve Mackey and singer/actor/librettist Rinde Eckert to create the music and theater performance Slide, featured in the 2009 winning album Lonely Motel: Music from Slide.
