Ed Palermo Big Band Information
Since the late '70s, New Jersey-born saxophonist Ed Palermo has led the New York City-based ensemble known as the Ed Palermo Big Band, which performs Palermo's compositions and arrangements. While Palermo's arrangements of Frank Zappa's music have made the band famous, they also play and record music by a broad variety of other artists, including Todd Rundgren, The Beatles, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, The Rolling Stones, Blodwyn Pig, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, and countless others.
During high school, Ed Palermo picked up the guitar and alto saxophone. By that time, he had already settled on a music career. The Beatles and the Mothers of Invention were two early inspirations that steered him on that path. While still a teenager, Palermo also developed a fondness for Edgar Winter. For this reason, he began to try to sound like jazz greats like Cannonball Adderley, Phil Woods, and Charlie Parker. He played alto saxophone in high school but was influenced to switch to tenor sax by artists like John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, and David Liebman when he got to college.
After receiving his bachelor's degree, Palermo uprooted to New York to pursue a career as a jazz tenor saxophonist. He decided to give arranging a shot after listening to Charles Tolliver's "Impact" album. After consulting his buddy and fellow arranger Dave LaLama, Palermo set out to write and arrange his music.
