Earl Lee Information
Earl Lee (December 9, 1983) is a Korean-Canadian cellist and conductor. He was born in Yeosu, South Korea. Lee got his musical start as a cellist in the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. At 16, he was admitted to and enrolled in cello studies under Orlando Cole and Peter Wiley at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music. 2005 Earl Lee graduated from The Curtis Institute of Music and studied cello with David Soyer at The Juilliard School, earning his master's degree. In 2010, he began his shift towards conducting by taking lessons from Ignat Solzhenitsyn.
Lee studied conducting with George Manahan at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned his master's degree in 2013. He studied conducting at NECM's graduate level under Hugh Wolff. From 2015 to 2018, Earl Lee held the position of RBC Resident Conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Earl Lee is the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's Associate Conductor right now. As of August 2021, the Boston Symphony Orchestra will have Earl Lee serving as its Assistant Conductor.
After being recognized as one of Canada's most promising up-and-coming conductors, Ontario Arts Council gave Earl Lee its 50th Anniversary Heinz Unger Award in 2018. After being selected by conductor Kurt Masur, he was awarded the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Scholarship in 2013. With this award, he was allowed to travel to Leipzig, Germany, to learn more about Felix Mendelssohn's life and music.
