Dubuque Symphony Orchestra Information
The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra is a professional orchestra whose inception can be traced back to 1903. Its current structure was organized in 1958, under the University of Dubuque’s auspices, as the “University Civic Symphony.” The symphony was given its current name in 1974. More than 40 years ago, the orchestra used to present five concerts annually under Dr. Parviz Mahmoud, the founding music director, and conductor. He was also the conductor of the Tehran Symphony and head of the Iranian Radio Broadcasts, and the Iranian Administrators of Music.
Nicholas Palmer (1985–1999) was the second music director of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. Under his directions, the orchestra grew, and the number of concerts performed increased from 5 to 27 in the 1991–1992 season. In 1999, Maestro Palmer was named Conductor Emeritus of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra to recognize his orchestra’s service. The current music director of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra is William Intriligator, who was appointed in 2000.
Under the direction of William Intriligator, the orchestra experienced tremendous growth and success. The orchestra organized the Dubuque Youth Symphony Orchestra (DYSO) in 1969. The goal of the DYSO was to assist in the development of young musicians. This Youth Symphony consists of around 50 of the area’s best student musicians coming from as far away as Prairie du Chien, WI.
Some of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra’s notable piano players are Robert Taub, piano 2000 and 2002, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, piano 2005, George Zukerman, bassoon, 1996 Rex Martin, tuba, 1998.
