DJ Quik Information
David Marvin Blake (January 18, 1970) is an American songwriter, rapper, record producer, and DJ. He is better known by his stage name, DJ Quik. He is best known for his production in the G-funk style of West Coast hip-hop. Blake was born in Compton, California. Quik was inspired by funk and soul artists such as George Clinton and Roger Troutman from an early age. He began selling homemade mixtapes when he received a turntable for his 8th-grade promotion. He began playing shows around Southern California at an early age.
Quik’s mixtapes gained enough following that made him earn an opportunity to sign a record deal with big labels such as Ruthless Records and Profile Records. He went on with Profile Records in the summer of 1990. In 1991, he released his debut album entitled Quik is the Name. The album reached number 10 on the album charts and received platinum certification by RIAA.
On July 20, 1992, Quik came up with his second album entitled Way 2 Fonky. The album was certified Gold the same year on October 9. The album included a few of his most successful singles, such as “Jus Lyke Compton” and “Way 2 Fonky”. He has worked on a few collaboration albums, including Blaqkout (with Kurupt in 2009) and Rosecrans (with Problem in 2017).
Some of the other notable albums released by DJ Quik so far include Safe + Sound (1995), Rhythm-al-ism (1998), Balance & Options (2000), Under tha Influence (2002), Trauma (2005), The Book of David (2011), and The Midnight Life (2014).
